THE FUTURE OF MEDIA IS THE ESSENTIAL, COMPREHENSIVE BOOK ABOUT THE STATE OF MEDIA IN THE UNITED STATES AND WHAT WE CAN EACH DO TO CHANGE IT.
Co-edited by acclaimed media scholar Robert W. McChesney, the book features chapters by Bill Moyers, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, Rep. Bernie Sanders, and Newspaper Guild president Linda Foley, among many others. With the American political landscape dominated by the influence of big business, the timing of The Future of Media could hardly be more precipitous. Endlessly pressured by lobbyists payrolled by corporate broadcasters, Congress is poised to reopen the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which will reshape every facet of our media as we know it for decades to come. Winners and losers are about to be decided, while at the same time new technologies are emerging which could truly revolutionize and democratize our media system-and our culture. From cutting edge analysis to blueprints for action, The Future of Media presents a diverse collection of voices from today's growing media reform movement.
ROBERT W. MCCHESNEY is Research Professor in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the Founder and President of Free Press, a nonprofit organization working to involve the public in media policymaking and to craft policies for a more democratic media system. He is the author of numerous books on media policy including the multiple award-winning Rich Media, Poor Democracy (1999), and most recently, The Problem of the Media: U.S. Communication Politics in the Twenty-First Century (2004).
RUSSELL NEWMAN serves as Campaign Director for Free Press, tracking current media issues and overseeing initiatives ranging from grassroots organization to new research projects. A Waterston Scholar at Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Management, he specialized in political economy of mass communication, nonprofit management and documentary production. He also holds a degree in Brain and Cognitive Science from MIT.
BEN SCOTT is a Policy Director in the Washington office of Free Press. Previously, he served as a Legislative Fellow in the House of Representatives, handling telecommunications policy in the office of Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-VT). He has written several articles on the history of American journalism and media policy making. Most recently, he is the editor, with Robert W. McChesney, of Our Unfree Press: 100 Years of Radical Media Criticism (2004).
