ORIGIN

Occupy Utrecht, in collaboration with the #globalchange and #occupywallstreet global movement, occupied the Ganzenmarkt on October 15, 2011.

On May 15th we watched the start of the movement in Spain and since September 17th the demonstrations on Wall Street. In solidarity with the Indignados and #occupywallstreet we demonstrate for freedom and equality.

Not only should everyone have access to the riches of the world, but everyone should have equal decision rights. Not just the few! Electing representatives who fail to fulfill agreements is NOT a democracy. A country in which fictitious debts coincide with real cuts is NOT a free country.

Occupy Utrecht wishes by peaceful action to place fundamental issues onto the agenda. We invite everyone to join us in looking for and to achieve improvements. Progress, cooperation and awareness are the key words of this movement.

STATEMENT

Occupy Utrecht has no leaders or representatives. This is an action on behalf of anyone and for everyone.

We are ordinary people. We, like you, are individuals who get up every morning to go to school, work, or look for work. We are people with family and friends.

Some see themselves as progressive, others conservative. Some believe in a god, others in an ideology or political viewpoint, and others do not yet know what they dare to believe in.

However, we are all concerned because of the political, economic and social conditions around us. We are caught in the game of politicians, bankers and the market, whereby the majority loses out, left without a voice or a prospect of a fundamental improvement.

Equality, solidarity, freedom, sustainability, development, prosperity and welfare for the people should be the aim of every developed society.

Our monetary, economic and political systems fail to assert these rights and in many cases are an obstacle.

Our financial system gives banks the opportunity to make money out of thin air and to lend it on with interest. The increasing amount of interest for the individual, company or society - in the form of government debt - leads to a society where debt grows exponentially and unprecedented power is concentrated in a few.

The operation of our current economic system then reinforces inequality, scarcity and an excessive culture of greed at the top. Even though our knowledge of technology and automation could provide more freedom and abundance, it has instead brought us more work and more poverty.

The shameless appropriation of both raw materials and human capital must stop, here and now!

We need a revolution which again places the welfare of man, society and the earth first.

We ask for deepening awareness and awakening. An understanding which can only ask for change. It starts with the individual, but together we can find each other and make a difference. Let us come together and work out ideas for the future.

It's time to join forces. It's time for change. It's time to collectively work towards a better society for all.

I know what I do makes a difference.
I am the change and I stand in one of the following places:

Alkmaar Amsterdam Amersfoort Baarn-Soest Den Haag Dordrecht Ede
